I am running Windows 98 (First Edition) with a Kensington Orbit Trackball mouse.

Recently, the active window becomes inactive whenever I move the mouse away from it. This happens regardless of the application being used. For example, if I am in Word or writing an email and the mouse moves away from that window I cannot type again until I move the mouse back to the window somewhere. When more than one window is open, moving the mouse will change the active window also.

I have followed the Kensington instructions for installing/uninstalling & updating the mouse/software. I've also completely removed it all and connected various standard two-button ps/2 mice using the standard mouse driver and the issue remains.

I don't know of any changes made to the system recently.

Has anyone had this problem or know how to correct it?

Do you have TweakUI installed? If so, have a look at the first page, MOUSE, and see if X Mouse is checked. Hidden DOS secret: Add BUGS=OFF to your CONFIG.SYS

Please tell me if the answer I gave was correct. Without your feedback I won't know.

Thanks for the help everybody.
The Tweaki programs was in fact installed on this unit (version 3.1.5). Under "WinTweaks", on the "System Tab" there is an "Enable X Mouse Support" option. Oddly, enabling this option resolved the issue.

No recognition then. Press any key... no, No, NO, NO!! Not THAT one!

Thanks Enkrypted, but I would have preferred teckall to have written a simple "Thanks Crustyoldbloke, you got it right for once!"

Still, now that you have awarded the medal and this thread will go back to the top and be in his "My Threads" when next he logs on, perhaps he will ................... Computer: A device designed to speed and automate errors.
