Hello all. I have a Definity G3 rel 12 and recently had a Medpro and clan installed to enable IP trunks to our new IP Office site. I picked up a 4620 SW IP phone and also built an Asterisk box.

What i'm looking to do is Convert the 4620 SW ip to SIP make it an extension on the Asterisks box and connect the asterisks box to the definity via IP trunks. This way I can use the Definity for outgoing calls. My hopes are to learn VoIP and ip trunking and brush up on my linux.

Can anyone help me with this? I have a TFTP server setup for the IP office. Do i need a seperate one for the Definity, Do i need an HTTP server? and are there any walk thrus for setting up ip trunks on the Definity side? I'm guessing that i first need to set up a signaling group then the trunk but someone said i need to set up an IP region. I guess i just need a little hand holding. I don't want to mess up anything since our definity connects us with about 6 other offices.

Thanks!

Actually the IP Office doesn't need a TFTP server, all you have to do is have manager open and point the phone to the IP address of where manager is running.

I'm not sure I understand why you're running a TFTP server for IP Office and looking to do the same for the Definity. There is a document which talks about connecting a definity to an IP600 via IP trunk. Basically this can be used to setup an IP trunk between an IP Office and a Definity though I do not recall where I saw it last (I think Avaya is hiding it). That may be a good place to start

Perhaps someone still has the link to that document.

Avaya says you need the TFTP server to load the bin files to the phones. IP phones on the Definity and IP office will always look to the TFTP server for software updates. The 4600 phones come loaded with the H323 bin files and must be upgraded with the SIP bin files thru the TFTP server. The doc i read mentioned the need for an HTTP server if you convert the SIP back to H323 but im not sure if you need it for H323 to SIP. I'm going to guess the the HTTP gives you a web interface for easy configuration instead of using the phones display???

What happened? You guys dropped this thread like a hot potatoe.

To convert a 4620 from H.323 to SIP, you need to first upgrade it to the latest firmware. Then you can convert the phone to SIP by typing this in on the keypad while it is up and running... HOLD,S,I,G,#. Change the setting to SIP. Then you use the TFTP server to send the SIP BIN files (it should find them automatically if you loaded all of the files for the 4620 from support.avaya.com to the TFTP server) Then create a 46xxsettings.txt file to act as script to SET all of the SIP configurations to the phone. (use the 46xx installation and administration guides for help) A HTTP server is only needed if you have a 4602SW SIP phone.

IP Regions are for the Definity to know what codec it should use to connect to certain IP addresses. for example site A has IP addresses 192.168.1.1 thru 192.168.1.254 and site B has IP addresses 10.10.10.1 thru 10.10.10.255. If you assign site A IP addresses to Region 1 and site B's to Region 2, then you can set G.711 codec to use within each region and G.729 to use between the regions.

For your configuration, you will probably want to setup your entire IP range in one region. And if you are currently connecting to other Definitys via VoIP, the your region should already be set up.

Thank you redphone. I do have a 4602SW.
