Getting ready to roll out about a dozen 4610 IP phones for a satellite office. This is our first set of IP phones. Phone usage is rather lite as they are mostly scientists and engineers....what's a good, inexpensive 24 or 48 port PoE switch that have worked well for others here? Not much of a Cisco fan and inexpensive pretty much rules them out...but I am open to suggestions.

You might be better off using the inline power supplies since cost is a factor. These inline power supplies can be used with any switch.

SEMSD,

use avaya c363t-pwr. good one, and cheaper than cisco.
or, if you want to get the cheapest solution, go for standalone power supplies, 1151b1 model is supported with ip phones and its price is about $40 per unit. for a dozen of 'em it wouldn't be too much of a maintenance headache.

There is a new closet product, LW only POE switch from Cisco.

WS-CE500-24PC

List $795, 24 ports.

Thanks,
CJH

98Converter,

wow, that's cool, thanks. i think i must do some further research...

Where did you find it for $795.00? I saw it for closer to $2k? Not that $2k is a bad deal but just curious.

98Converter,

well, research show that gpl price is not $795 but $2795. and that makes difference, you see. ;)
also considering that c363t-pwr, unlike ws-ce500-24pc, has l3 capabilities, stacking fabric, normal configuration options instead of some weird "cisco recommended preconfigured settings" AND its list price is $3395, i don't see any overwhelming advantage on cisco side. more of it, catalyst express' maximum powered port density is 24, and this gives us $2795/24 = $116.46 price per port. but c364t-pwr will cost $5495/48 = $114.48 per powered port. bump.
and how about deploying more than one switch? c360 supports stacking, and catalyst express does not. stacking module list price is $395, you need one per switch... well, if you need to deploy 96 powered ports, you'll get two c364t-pwr with stacking modules: ($5495 + $395) * 2 = $11780, and in case of cisco catalyst express you'll need four ce500-24pc plus one ce500-12tc for backbone switching -- which makes $2795 * 4 + $1995 = $13175. bump again. more ports, more the difference. not for cisco advantage.

... i'm always wondering, why anybody buy cisco switches? avaya ones do the same, have the same robustness and are much cheaper.

How 'bout the HP Procurve 2626-PWR. This has 24 ports, supports stacking without any additional modules and can be had for around $1700.00, comes with a free Lifetime warranty: for as long as you own the product, with next-business-day advance replacement. This is what I decided to go with since the rest of my network is HP.

I'm with you Dwalin on the Cisco switch thing. If I didn't find this HP switch I probably would have gone down the Avaya path.

Yikes!

I'll do some research b4 I post next time. This was actually quoted to me by an Avaya "Platinum" Business partner...

He said list was $795.00, and our cost would be $550.00. I should buy them at that price, and ebay them if that's the case.

Sorry guys...

Thanks,
CJH
