you also might try running virus, adware and spyware scans to be on the safe side. Sometimes those will cause sys to slow down.

well the only thing that comes to mind at the moment would be to either disconnect the connection that goes to the router or disable it through the network places properties. Althought having a connection to a direct internet source (providing that its a cable line that is always connected)...

If need be you might also try uninstalling the printer from the 98 machine and reinstalling it. Although I havent really had much experiance with win98 I dont think that you need to install print drivers on the 98 machine if you are just adding a network printer.
