Maybe your Windows has a problem to assign a drive letter. Did you check that in the disk management?

It is surely enough a communication problem between your printer and the pc. The data transfer of your old USB-card could be to slow. Try an USB 2.0 interface card, that should work.

A Windows-system? Do they print via server or directly to the printer? On a server you can configure the spooler to not delete the printed spoolfiles, but this will cost you a lot of diskspace, especially for pictures...
You should indicate a bit more information. Btw it's surely NO hardware...

The only thing I can figure out is that the user has to start the program with a script/batch. The script checks if the program is already started and if yes doesn't start it again.

a colleague got a strange problem: his windows 98 crashed after the installation of Nvidia-Forceware 61.76 and DirectX 9.0b. So he reinstalled Windows completly. But now in Windows Explorer Menu and in the right-click context menu the "new" key disappeared, so he cannot create a new folder...
did you try intellipoint from Microsoft? Silly enough this often works...

oh. how about a spamfilter? We use Mailsweeper and only a few spams per day escape this system.
Of course you don't need to archive spams ;-)

A hub connected to a hub... that's a great way to create trafic collisions. Those 2 pcs are surely not 100Mbits fullduplex, as the NICs do most of the time nothing but filtering out wrong packets. Try setting them on 10Mbits half duplex for testing purposes.

USB 2.0 -devices really work best with USB 2.0 interfaces ;-)
Got the same trouble with a WiFi-stick. ASUS said: should work on USB 1 with reduced speed; but no connection at all. With the USB 2-card the stick got a marvelous new life...
Did you verify which programs run at startup?
