One thing to point out, we were advised that the IDataAgents for Sharepoint 2003 only work on Galaxy 5.9. When we had 4.2 running the Sharepoint agents we were sent by our reseller could not back up SPS 2003 at all.
Hope this helps

I've never heard of any settings that will stop AD replication..
Because of this our approach is to disconnect the link from our DR site to our production network.
As we use pluggable disks we first remove one mirrored disk so no matter what changes we make to AD under DR conditions we can...
You'll usually find a file system backup fails to catch open log files and the databases.
Something with a proper database agent or mailbox agent will do the job better. You could run that alongside a File System backup which avoids the Stores.
Yes you'll need to use ESEUTIL to run an offline defrag. Check the MS Knowledgebase article 192185 which describes the command switches and the procedure.

I'm using Trend Scanmail for Exchange. Used to use InoculateIT, but had problems with the realtime scanner. Scanmail works well, updates automatically without any intervention and can be checked remotely through a browser.
Additionally all of our email is passed through MessageLabs.

You will need enough space to hold a new copy of the database with some free space left over. The defrag operation will create a new copy of the Info Store, I think MS recommended free space is 110% of the existing IS Size.
Hope this helps

Here's the batch file I used to use for offline backups:
net stop "FACSys Fax Connector (servername)"
net stop "Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service"
net stop "Microsoft Exchange Message Transfer Agent"
net stop "Microsoft Exchange Event Service"
net...
You can create custom recpients in Exchange. These can contain external email addresses as opposed to entries from the Global Address List. It would then presumably be possible to add this custom recipient as the alternate recipient for a given mailbox.
I've never actually tried this (and I'm...
The controller in slot 7 is likely to be the SMART 5300. I normally leave all disks running through that, it has much better performance that the onboard SCSI ports. Most Compaq servers I've worked on have 2 built in SCSI ports so that's probably why they appear in the diags.
Not sure why the...
Exchange 5.5 Disaster Recovery on NT4
N.B. as the title says this guide only covers Exchange 5.5 on NT4. I have no details on the recovery required for Windows 2000, nor any experience of recovering Exchange 2000 yet.
In order to recover your Exchange server the NT SAM at your DR site...
If you look at the Private Information Store properties (Configuration/servername/Private Information Store). On the General page you can set the default limits.

I've always preferred to run Exchange on a dual processor box (currently 2xPIII-500 Xeon). When we move to Ex2K I'll be looking for a faster box, quad processor capable, although it'll probably only start with 2, plus 1GB ram. I have around 450 mailboxes at present and performance is pretty good...
Retention period can be set on the properties of the private and public information store.
Message tracking can be enabled from the Information Store Site Configuration, the MTA Site configuration and also on your Internet Mail Service configuration. You can also choose how long to keep the log...
Yes I have to agree with the rest of the admins here, I had to sign a confidentiality agreement to keep the management happy. As part of my job it is expected I may see confidential information. The expectation though is that it goes no further. That's not a problem for me. Nobody seems to...
You can specify domains to block in the Internet Mail Service dialog. Choose the connections tab and hit the Message Filtering button. You can then enter the domain or user@domain you want to block. You can also choose whether to simply delete the incoming messages or dump them to the turf...
I've tried this before and it wouldn't work. Alternate Recipient worked fine for messages received by a mailbox, but wouldn't handle anything sent from the mailbox.

Lola, Microsoft has said that SP4 is a cumulative release containing all updates to Exchange to date. That would imply it's OK to jump straight from SP2 to 4. Haven't done it myself though. I was already on SP3 when I upgraded.
Hope this helps

On 5.5 you can use message filtering in your Internet Mail Service to block email from specific addresses or email domains.
Go to the connections tab in the IMS properties. There should be a 'message filtering' button. Here you can add the domain names or actual addresses. You also have the...
No just a thought Lee, I know if this is checked it should block any automatically generated emails from going out. I've never tested what happens with my own system. I get NDRs in my Support mailbox, but I'll do some tests to see if my system behaves the same as yours for external recipients...
You'll probably need a third party tool to do this. I used U-Promote from Algin Technology to demote a PDC to a member server and it should do just the same for a BDC.
Take a look at http://www.algintech.com/UTools/UPromote.asp
Hope this helps
