Exchange 5.5 Standard Edition

We are presently using 5.5 standard edition and the msexchangeisdatabase has reached its limit. The information store refuses to start. Is there any work arrounds to get it working. We have deleted a large amount of emails but the priv.edb file has not changed in size.

Would running ESutils help. If so how reliable is this command.

Yes you'll need to use ESEUTIL to run an offline defrag. Check the MS Knowledgebase article 192185 which describes the command switches and the procedure.
