Of course I understand. I'm used to working with end-users on a daily basis so I try to keep as simple as possible. I've got a long one that shows just the sheet name, too.

If you want to hide them in an entire sheet, you can also turn it off in Tools > Options | View tab. To hide them, clear the Zero Values check box.
If you want specific cells, you can also:
1. Highlight the cells (non-contiguous cells by holding CTRL and clicking)
2. Click Format > Cells

Another method: if you have Adobe Acrobat (full version, not the reader) and no animation, you can convert the file to a .PDF and lock it down that way.
Obviously, this is not perfect. PowerPoint 2002, by the way, FINALLY has this ability (though they still cannot get Org Chart right...)
Is the Preview Pane turned on? Does this happen when the message is clicked?
IF SO:
Check the setting in Tools > Options | Other tab.
Under Preview Pane options, set the time value next to Mark Messages as Read in Preview Window and Mark Messages as Read when Selection Changes.
