W2K SP3 has caused this same problem with me and I found that the OS was not releasing the file after it had been opened with and software. Upgrade to SP4 and it will disappear

if you can use something like a text editor in linus you can select and copy your configuration.
open a connection to the router and go to config mode
then paste back what is in memory.
Thie will write back the configuration
if you try the following you will get the username
note the pc number of the sender of the message
1 tracert pcnumber (This will give you the IP Address)
2 nbtstat -A IP Address will give you the logged on username
You need to set up an LMHOSTS file on your local machine with the IP Addresses of the resources you need to contact on the network. And you will need to statically assign yourself an unused ip address.
This should allow the VPN to function properly
users can only log on locally if they are registered on the local workstation and their profile is available on the workstation. If you need to register users on the local workstations give them no rights to mess with the local settings. Have you tried policy editor
we had a similar problem and it turned out to be the wins database. You say you are using mostly DHCP. Are the workstations which do not use DHCP remaining on your domain?
