Hi,

I am having a problem copying a file on a server (to a different folder on the same server) from my computer. I have Win2K (sp3). I close the file I'm working on, try to copy it from one folder to another, and get "cannot copy this file - the source or destination file may be in use." Same thing happens on a coworker's machine that is identical to mine (same OS, hardware, etc). But a 3rd coworker (also Win2K, but sp4), copies the same file to the same destination I try and it works just fine - even if she has the file open!! Very strange. We have verified that the file is NOT open by anybody for editing, and it's not listed in ServerMgr as "In Use". Any ideas on why we're getting a sharing violation on a file that's not in use to begin with? Thanks.

What file are you trying to copy and which directory is it in?

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

Hi - it's a data file on our secondary partition (nothing on the system partition). We're trying to copy a data file from one folder to another. Nobody has the file open, it's not a system file or anything like that. I can't copy it, but somebody else can. FYI, we've checked the permissions - DomainUsers have "Change" rights to this drive, so it's not that I don't have write access to this location and my coworker does.

The user that can copy the file, does she also have change rights? Is she the owner of the document?

W2K SP3 has caused this same problem with me and I found that the OS was not releasing the file after it had been opened with and software. Upgrade to SP4 and it will disappear
