I know it's not much of a solution, however most game makers suggest you don't run any virus software and also as little else as possible while playing.
I also had this occur. I think I deleted the profile, then re-added as an Admin account...it worked. I don't remember if it worked after changing the account type to user however.
I have a Comcast cable internet connection. Whenever the connection "burps", a simple modem reset won't do to restore the link, I also have to reboot to be able to bring up web pages. Is there an XP Service or Process I could restart/reset to achieve the same thing?

Hey I take offense to the term "computer jockey". Besides, Win XP defaults to formatting with NTFS which is superior. Anyway, linney is correct.
You also might have to change the jumper settings on the back of the drives. There should be a diagram there for which setting is for which purpose (master or slave).
Hope this helps, but my friend just bought a laptop and something similar was occurring. I went in and manually started the "Print Spooler" service. After that the Add Printer Wizard started normally.
Try having him roll back the driver to the previous one from device manager. See if it will work after that. If so try to use a MS signed driver whenever possible.
