Opening/appending a MS Word Document with a Perl CGI script

I'm using an Apache server running on Linux, and have a large, 4-part form that calls my Perl script to open an existing blank file and append to it, then save it. I have no trouble doing this with a text file, however I would like to output a formatted MS Word document for my client's convenience. If I upload a blank Word document, and have the script open it and append, it does the job, however the Word header is rewritten as text, so the file is no longer recognized by Word. Anyone have any solutions or suggestions?
