J series is avaya's new "10 year" phone. It replaces the 9611G.

i am assuming (not good) that we are h.323

how do i verify?

h323 has been the avaya standard for years. You are more than likely using H323 unless you have Session Manager. The command "list registered-ip-stations" will show h323 stations along with the firmware version.
