I just upgraded my machine from a Dell Optiplex to a Dell Precision 330 workstation with 1.5 MHZ and 256 MB of RAM. I took all of my devices from my previous machine and Transplanted my zip, dvd and cd writer drives in my new machine and I can't get my zip to work or floppy drive and my cd writer is recognized as a cd writer but it won't write cd's. I didn't reinstall the OS when I did the transplant of my old devices I simply put them in and they where recognized by Windows 2000 my OS. Should I reinstall the OS with the new devices already attached or should I try reinstalling the drivers for each device. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

What type of CD writer? Any specific drivers being used?

The only major worktstation issues I have so far in testing W2K is with HP CD writers using USB. The same HP CD writers used on Dell notebooks with Win98 worked fine. These HP CD writers on Win2k, and the HP USB drivers don't work, cause numerous problems. Have been to HP's website, didn't see any issues last time I checked. Have downloaded the newest drivers. At Dell's website, likewise, see no issues.

I have reloaded the W2K OS from scratch, and tested different configs, and it always comes down to the HP drivers not liking the Dell in W2K. I can, however, get these same HP USB drivers to work with an HP workstation running W2K.

I have a ricoh cd writer dvd and a iomega zip of course and a regular floppy drive all of them will not work correctly and when I try to use my floppy drive it crashes my sytem. All the devices are IDE though. Thanks for responding any further assistance would be helpful. Thanks.

wizdom, I may be able to help w/ your CDR. One thing that causes problems is having the device piggy-backed. I realize that many time this setup works, but on the occasions when the drive is known to operate correctly previously, try using alone on a single cable. I've had great success w/ that troubleshooting tip.

As for the floppy crashing the system. That is not good. Two things that will help are to double check for conflicts in Device Manager, and more importantly check the Event Log (app & system logs) for some insight to what the last operations run on crash.

The Zip drive. I suggest you disconnect it til you get the rest of your system up. Once that is accomplished I'm sure the Zip will fall right into place. (I don't need to mention the latest drivers available).

Best of luck to you... keep us posted. -md

I have all the items you mentioned running on a machine that was converted( not upgraded) to W2K. Installing the proper drivers was a pain but after several attemps(removing & adding the devices) they loaded. The slave setting in bios had to be set to "none" in order to get the machine to boot with the Zip. All has been working well for several months.
