I need to put a phone number, 0845 into excel. How do I format the cell to show the initial zero?

all you need to do is format the cell with a Custome Number format

Format>Cell>Custom

overwrite the General bit with 0000 000000

This will allow you to enter 0845 123456 and have it appear the same (instead of 845 123456)
