Is there anything special I need to know in adding a second cpu to the dual-cpu xseries 220? any jumpers?

The cpu I have is a 1 gig, everything matches from what I can see. The system boots with the two cpu's but doesn't recognize the new processor.

Nobody knows where the manuals are and ibm hasn't got much online.

During boot, does the system recognized the CPU - there should be a message at the top of the screen with CPU specs and something like, "SMP System with x Processors: BSP is P2 and P1 is AP." If not, go into CMOS (F1) and verify the CPU is detected and enabled. The new CPU must match the original in speed, and cache size.

It's not picking up on the second cpu at all... cpu's are paired for speed and cache, no problem. There's nothing in the cmos that I can see to activate a second cpu. Is there a jumper or something with the hardware that I need to change? According to IBM it should be just plug in and go.

No jumper. It should just go. There is a CMOS setting to enable CPUs. You may be interested in swapping the CPUs to see if it follows the CPU or the Slot.

One other thing I do not see where you added the new CPU. Did you add a VRM if not that is your problem.

If you are not sure with the front of the system faceing you open the case and remove the metal arm (unplug the fan first). Find the first CPU, between it and the drive trays there should be a VRM pluged into the Motherboard (That is how they come from the factory). Now find the second CPU between it and the memory slots there is the adapter that a VRM will plug into. if you see a plastic slot with pins showing you have a MAJOR problem. If you have a VRM let me know and I will try some other things. I have 11 x220 servers that I have direct access to.

DOH!! Missed that altogether. No, there is no voltage regulator installed. :*( And typically why it won't pick up the cpu. Darn

Thank you.
