The user reports that they are unable to set up a maintenance plan for a db to get the db to backup automatically.

I right clicked on the db and selected properties, and I get the following error message:

ODBC SQL State: 42000
Error 0: Cannot load the dll xptar.dll, or one of the dll's it references. Reason: 126 (the specified module could not be found.)

I can click thru this message 3 times, then it shows me properties.

I just looked at a maintenance plan they have set up that was working previously for this db. I did right click-properties for the maintenance plan and get the following:
SQL State 42000
ERror 22272: canot load the dll xpstar.dll . . . (same as other message)

I then tried to set up a new maintenance plan. I get as far as the back up screen, and I get the xpstar.dll message.

I am not having much luck tracking down any of these errors. What is xpstar.dll? What could be causing this to fail?

Thanks!
Sherry

xpstar.dll is a dll that should appear on the SQL Server it self. Try reinstalling most recent service pack you are running (or the next service pack) and the file should be put back in place. The file may have become corrupt.

Are there any messages when the SQL Server startup up in the errorlog about this file being a problem?

I don't see anything in errorlog about it. However, I've searched and cannot find xpstar.dll anywhere. I will reinstall SP3 and see what happens.

Thanks!

Somwehere towards the top of the file you should see something like "Using 'xpstar.dll' version '2000.80.2039' to execute extended stored procedure 'xp_sqlagent_monitor'." if the file is there. The file should be in your Binn folder (normally c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Binn\).
