Hello all,

I have a test environment configured with two Citrix metaframe XPa servers. I have joined the second metaframe server to the zone and have published desktop from it, under the properties for the published desktop i have selected to only allow server2 to host it. When i try and connect from a wyse terminal to server 2 i receive an error stating the ima service is not running and to verify licensing.

I can however connect to server1 with no problems, I installed and activated my evaluation licenses, using the management console when i view under licensing and then for FR3 it states two servers. And server2 shows up in the management console correctly. I am to a point where I would like to test and work with the load balancing functionality, although I can configure load evaluators for both servers I am obviously not able to run a session on server2 for what looks to be licensing configuration.

Can someone please explain how i must also license server2 to accept connections if i have already installed and activated the licenses under the citrix management console and server1 works fine. Is this is a limitation to using the 90 day evaulation version, that load balancing and more then one server in a farm does not function?

Thank you.

As far as i know, there are only evaluations available for Citrix XPe, and XPa, or XPs.
In the CMC, rightclick on server, and select "set product code". Then try changing them both to XPe.

The complete list of options is:

XPs retail: 0100-0f4a
XPs Not For Resale: 0200-0254
XPs evaluation: 0306-32f0

XPa retail: 0a00-0c32
XPa Not For Resale: 0b00-012c
XPa evaluation: 0c06-3188

XPe retail: 0d00-06a7
XPe Not For Resale: 0e00-06c0
XPe evaluation: 0f06-3bid

I will try changing them to XPe then, because if I recall correctly both server1 and server2 are set to the XPa evaluation product code 0c06-3188 but Im not at work anymore so cant confirm it for sure. Why would XPe offer this functionality and not XPa's eval version?

XPs does NOT offer resource based load balancing, however XPa & XPe do. Check to make sure the Independent Management Architecture Service is started on the machine that is not responding to requests.

Due to a typo, i meant to say:
As far as i know, there are only evaluations available for Citrix XPe, and not for XPa, or XPs. (at least i have never seen them)

As you allready said; ;try changing them to Xpe, and see what happens.
Did the current codes match your XPa though?

Hi guys.

Patrik I will confirm the IMA service is running on the second server.

xs4citrix, I am using XPa which DOES include load manager and the web interface, XPe includes these plus the resource monitor and and applicationd deployment suite. THats the biggest difference, however both XPa and XPe support load management.

And yes the product code for both servers did match that of the XPa eval that you posted above, i tried to changing the product code, i tried XPe eval which didnt work but it took the code of the XPe retail? Because I dont actually have retail licenses it probaly accepted the retail code but will not function?

I will confirm this for sure when i get into work this morning.

But I will confirm the ima service on server2 and post back my finding, though im not sure why it would not be running since I did not knowingly disable it.

Thanks guys.

it appears i failed to add one license. I did not realize that if I for instance had 3 servers then I would need 9 nine different licences installed?

As it is using just the two serves in my test environment requires 6 licenses activated, XP, FR1 and FR3 each for as many servers as are in the farm, i had only 5 so i missed a license, I did not think this would be an issue, seeing as how many larger farms are ten or twenty plus serves this adds up to a ton of licenses listed under the licensing tabs. But once I corrected this issue i could establish a connection to server2. So that was the problem.

THanks for the help much appreciated.

Licenses are not required per-server. This was one of the big changes in Citrix Licensing with MFXP. If you're installing licenses via the CMC don't apply them directly to an aindividual server, or they will be tied to that machine.

If you have MFXP 1.0 FR3 + 100 connections licenses you can run one MFXP Server or ten with the same Citrix Licenses.

When XPe first came out I was doing an evaluation and was told that for the evaluation I needed a license for each server to test the load balancing, etc. This is only for evaluation, using "real" licenses the license is for the farm.

ahhhh okay. that would explain it then. it all makes sense now. haha

thanks again guys.
