I've been looking around for awhile to see whether there is a way to define the *from* field using xp_sendmail but it appears there isn't.

Is the only way to change the from field by changing the outlook profile on the sql server?

I also see another xp_SMTP_sendmail that needs to be installed but can define the from.

Can anyone suggest the best way to approach my problem? Thanks.

You can not change the from field with xp_sendmail. It's tied directly to the default from address of the mailbox that Outlook is configured for.

xp_smtp_sendmail works very well on SQL 2000 or SQL 2005 and allows you to define the from address of the email.

How about SPAM filtering problems with SMTP_sendmail?

I did some testing with it and hotmail was filtering it and I suspect it may be related to the fact that it's relayed off our server from sql server and not an existing mapi profile.

There aren't any issues with using xp_smtp_sendmail and it getting caught by a spam filter. At least there aren't any issues that you don't have along with sending mail from anywhere else.

If all depends on the content of the email if it's going to be caught by a spam filter. Along with how the email is tagged as it's going through the mail servers.
