I just installed XP2 on Windows XP Pro, SP1. The link to the dial up connection does nothing when it's clicked. Using the control panel to access network connections will eventually open the network connections window, but it is empty. In Administrative tools under services I find that Network Connections is stopped. Attempting to start it only brings up this message, "Could not start the Network Connection service on local computer. Error 126: The specified module could not be found."

In the Control Panel I tried to access the Windows Firewall and received this message, "Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service?" I click "yes" and am told, "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service.

In spite of the above dilemma, I can connect to my ISP when using Rascal Pro, a software program I've been using for about a decade. When I discovered that I could connect to the internet the first thing I did was install all of the updates provided by Microsoft in hopes that the problems would be solved by the updates. They were not, so I have come to this forum seeking the able assistance I have always found here.

When running windows in safe mode the problems remain. Any and all suggestions will be most appreciated.

Thanks for your help Bill.

The first two items succeeded. The third, netman.dll elicited this response:

"Load Library (netman.dll) failed the specified module could not be found."

Please advise.

if you installed SP2, you should proboboly have a backup.

Go ahead and goto C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\

Copy netman.dll to the C:\Windows\System32 directory and rerun the line that failed.

I'm sorry, the original directory again is C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\

Thank you Lloyd.

The file, netman.dll was present in C:\windows\system32.
I replaced it with the same file in the i386 folder. I then restarted the computer. However, the response is the same.

I do indeed have a backup, two clones on two other hard drives. To better inform those of you making the gallant effort to assist me, this is the latest of about a half dozen attempts to get SP2 installed on this computer. On the previous occasions I didn't have the determination to succeed in the endeavor and after failing to get it working properly I simply returned to SP1 with all of the available updates installed.

Now that Microsoft is pulling the plug on SP1 updates I have decided to do whatever is necessary to get SP2 working on this computer.

I have a laptop running SP2 without problems. However, with the laptop I started fresh with a format of the hard drive and installed windows from a CD made with a slipstream of the XP SP2 files into the installation directory of XP Pro.

I don't want to go that route with this computer as It would entail several days of effort to get everything installed and set up to my satisfaction.

Use this article to confirm a successful installation of SP2. Also look at your SP2 installation logs. The Setup program logs information about the Windows XP SP2 installation to the following log files: • Setupapi.log • Svcpack.log.

You receive an "Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the dynamic link library Shlwapi.dll" error message after you install the MS04-038 security update

Hooray!!! Solved at last. wzcsapi.dll missing.

One of the links offered by Linney provided the clue. Sorry, I don't recall which link.

It suggested the file C:\windows\system32\wzcsapi.dll may be corrupt or missing.

It wasn't present. I checked my laptop and found it present there.

I copied it from the i386 folder and damned if it didn't correct all of the problems described in my initial query.

My thanks to all of you for your assistance.
