I have setup a Windows 2000 Advance Server(domain controller) and a XP PRO Workstation. I am using the server as a Router. My hub is linksys - 8port. I am able to access the internet on both boxes. Using the XP workstation, I try to join the domain i.e. bowers.com I get the following error: "DNS name does not exist." (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR). The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.bowers.com Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem? Thanks in advance.

Have you checked all of the basics? Is your XP box getting an IP address via DHCP or is it static? Are your server and XP on the same subnet? Is your internal DNS server working properly? Are you getting any eventlog erros on your server?

Try setting up both the computer and the user on the DC first. XP is heavily dependant on DNS for name resolution and this should solve your problem.

hi ,
Try giving the dns address as the ip address of the domain controller with AD( if u have dns set up ) . if that is not an option try using lmhost file .

Anup

For my XP workstation: A) I am using no address for DNS resolution. B) My ip settings are DHCP enabled, and default gateway 10.10.1.1 (domain controller). I can ping the server and the ip address of the xp box is: 10.10.1.2, subnetmask = 255.0.0.0, default gateway 10.10.1.1. When I try to ping my server(greene.com) I get ip addresses from the internet, not my local lan. My event viewer errors for DNS are: "The DNS server could not bind a user datagram protocal (UDP) socket to 10.10.1.1 the event data is the error code. REstart DNS server or reboot". I appreciate everyone ideas and suggestions.

Your domain name conflicts with one already registered. I would suggest demoting your server and then repromoting with a unique fqdn. If you don't want to do this and you only care about lan connections then you'll need to disable forward lokup zones.

Thanks ALL for the info. Sorry it took so long for me to respond but I have been trying to fix errors in DHCP & DNS.

TO: Imatthec:
I took your advice and demoted and re-promoted my server - changed the FQDN and gave it a new IP address. that Worked. I now eliminated my linksys hub and have the Belkin router doing both tasks. My server was unable to connect to the internet, but I fixed that (againt DHCP errors). Now both the server and the XP workstation can access the web.

thanks again.

HI ALL,

I am still having a problem getting my XP workstation to join the domain. I am getting the following error message:

"The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain greene.com:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.greene.com

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:

greene.com
com
. (the root zone)"

Can anyone tell me how to fix it? thanks in advance.

I am using XP Pro and this is my INTERNAL domain name.

I assume you are using 2 nics on the server. Make sure the internal nic is registering in DNS and that the server is set as the DNS server. Set up forwarding using DNS servers provided by your ISP. If on your server you have a forward zone of ".", delete it. Vince Grice

Hi Vince,
thanks for the info. I am using one NIC card and I do have a forward zone of ".". Why do I want to delete it?

thanks in advance.

It will prohibit you from resolving anything external as it thinks it is the root DNS server for all DNS lookups Vince Grice

vgrice is right on the money. The server will think that it can't go any farther than "." because it thinks "." is the great and powerful OZ, so it won't look anywhere else. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson

Thanks all, so by deleting the forward zone of"." this will solve my DNS problems? I hope so.

thanks again.

Thanks Vgrice, I deleted "." and join the domain.

I really appreciate all your help.

I have setup a windows 2000 server and windows 2000 workstations. Setup active directory and DNS.
All the workstations are joyed to the domain and i can log-in.

My problem is when i try to add domain users to the administrator group on the workstations.
It comes up with the following error.
"The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

I have shearched Technet and could not find a solution.
Could any one shed some light on this problem.

Thanks
