XP won't let me remove bogus .dat files!! 1

Hej,
I know I have some .dat files that are of no use to me but when I go to delete them a window pops up telling me that I can't because they are being used by another program. I have found an article explaining how to remove them in safe mode with command prompt but it tells me that it erases all index.dat files but that windows will reload when it boots up again. I'm a bit of a chicken and not sure if i should try it. What do you think or does someone have another idea??.........Thanks...Denis
