I have a compaq laptop armada 1750.
recently i installed windows xp professional on same and worked fine.

now when i boot the machine, it automatically goes to a diagnostic utility and wont load windows xp.

anyone any ideas how i can get around this.

Can you be a bit more specific? What Diagnostic Utility? Do you get any error messages before the utility loads?

To add to Greg Palmer's concerns above:

. it worked fine for a while?
. it worked fine until you rebooted?

My guess is the latter case. It has to do with the System Restore/Diagnostic partition that is included as a Recovery means to become compliant with MSFT licensing.

Call the Tech Support at COMPAQ, as this is decidedly tricky. If you choose to use a Retail XP Pro installation, please advise back.

its compaq diagnositcs utility. when i switch the machine on it automatically runs and will not boot from floppy drive or cd rom. i did not get any error message when rebooting machine.
thanks

Are you sure that F10 or F12 will not let you choose a boot option?

If you could boot from the original XP CD, I suspect a bootcfg /rebuild would work:

If it absolutely will not let you boot from floppy or CD, it is time to call COMPAQ. Any other ideas I can think of would require a boot from CD or floppy.

I have some experience with Compaq's (both desk and laptops) and may be able to help you. They can be a bit tricky and hard to work on at times.

You say that you did the XP install. When you did how did you do it? If you simply ran the upgrade option you have more than likely set yourself up for problem after problem. What OS did you make the change from? What was the drive format and what is the current drive format? Do you know what (if any) partitions you have? Just a few question to help me try and figure out what is going on here.
