Hi everyone,

I've already located and tried the solutions to this problem which were posted on this site in October (?) 2003 (not sure of the date). It does not <seem> to be an application or process problem as it occurs even if I "Turn Off" the pc immediately after boot when nothing shows in the Task Manager window.

The problem apparently cropped up after I installed one of the many Windows <Critical> updates.

Does anyone have knowledge of this issue and hopefully a solution. I don't like to leave the room while the pc is still in process of shutting down.

Thanks,
John

Things to try:

1) Check for viruses (always). Some viruses intercept at shutdown to write themselves to the boot record, etc.

2) Clean out your Temporary files. This can make a big difference in both start up and shut down.

3) A corrupted sound file (the shutdown sound) will cause the system to hang. Try disabling the shutdown sound.

4) See if it shuts down slowly in Safe Mode. If not, then it's something else loading.

5) Try a program like "EndItAll" first, and see if it shuts down slowly after running that. EndItAll is a great little utility that shuts down all the processes running (very handy if you're getting restarts on your defrag/scandisk etc. also). If it shuts down quickly after running EndItAll, you know you've got a process not shutting down well.

Just my $.02

Happened to me awhile ago, too, and turned out that somehow an option to clear the pagefile at shutdown had been turned on.

Check in

Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options : Shutdown-clear virtual memory pagefile

to make sure that the option is not enabled (unless you want it to be). Disabling this completely cleared up my shutdown delay.

Good Luck.
