My apologies, I know this is the XP Professional forum but there doesn't seem to be a forum for XP Home.

I'm experiencing problems with SP2 installation. I've tried it on a number of occasions and all it ever achieves is the ability to lock my laptop and prevent it from booting up. I've tried disabling Norton's firewall and the Windows firewall separately to no avail.

The system is an Advent 7039 (PC World) It's an Athlon 64 3200+, 512Mb RAM, 128Mb Radeon Mobility graphics, with builtin wireless (not sure of branding).

When I install the service pack, my system fails to boot successfully, and freezes on the black background with the XP logo. I have to power off and reboot in safe mode to run system restore.

As I can get it into Safe Mode, I was wondering if anyone could make any suggestions as to what I could take a look at to see what is the problem?

Thanks
Dave

Thanks for the link - looks helpful! I'm going to try to find the m'board manufacturer so I can try for the BIOS upgrade.

Thing is, I'm not actually seeing an error message at all - the system simply freezes till I powercycle the laptop. When I boot it again in Safe Mode, I don't get any error messages then either.

I'll try the workaround and see what happens - can't hurt after all!

Thanks
Dave
