I don't normally do this sort of thing so 'scuse if this is a dumb question.

I have a brand new laptop with XP SP1 pre-installed. I've just gone through the "first time you boot it" stuff to get the basics up and running, but I haven't yet connected it to the rest of the world. I also (coincidentally) have a copy of SP2 on a Microsoft CD.

Now the question ...
Is this the best time to upgrade to SP2 ?

If not YES, why not, and what should I do before upgrading.

Cheers, Mike.

The best time to install SP2 is deffinatly as soon as possible after a new install. As your laptop is new this is a great time to do it. This will also give you added protection when you connect to the internet for the first time.

One thing to note is that there is a slight issue with SP2 and the new Intel Prescott Processors, whereby the PC needs a BIOS update.

Take a look at and see if it applies to you.

Check the laptop manufacturer's site to see if there are any SP2 or other upgrades. Often the installed XP image is several months behind important driver and other updates. There might well be a long list of SP2 related patches as well.

Thanks guys. No issues with either BIOS or drivers. Upgraded to SP2 with no problems. Installed AVG and a pile of other stuff. So here in the UK it's time to move into smug mode with a glass of fine wine :)

Cheers, Mike.

Did the "pile of other stuff" include a good firewall? I hope so, as the Windows filewall is pathetic.
