XP Soft Shutdown

After stripping down an XP Pro install to make it run faster I find I have to do a hard-shutdown ie. I get the 'now safe to turn off your computer' screen instead of the damn thing just turning itself off.

Any ideas what I have to re-enable?!

Go into Control Panel>Power Management and enable APM again.

Hmm.. all I got is 'Power Options' I see not mention of APM there...

You might want to make sure that the motherboard is ACPI compliant. i would check in the Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> under computer, make sure it says "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI). if it says "Standard PC", you might need to do a just a repair installation for Windows. it has happened to me before. I uninstalled some software and i guess some of the software deleted some system files and mine stopped turning off by itself as well. I did a repair off the Windows XP cd and everything was back to normal. Just to rule out something else, make sure ACPI/APM is turned on in the BIOS as well. let me know if you need anymore help.

Thankx Mush-it's def. not the bios as i have another XP installed on this machine, works fine. will investigate the ACPI..

Isn't a windows repair quite drastic? What exactly does it do? - And how much work will I have to do after setting up windows so it's 'back to how it was'?

A repair isn't drastic at all. like i said, the only thing you will need to do after repair is finished is reinstall all the windows updates. thats it. all programs will work like they are supposed to. so really all you need to do is the repair plus windows updates. your computer should be back to the way it was before it all happened.
