xp slow on boot and cmd prompt keeps closing

I have a 1.2 ghz machine with 512mb of memory running xp home I did a total reinstall of all software incl. the OS since then it takes a wihile till the GUI comes up (i get my background right away but not the icons and buttons) and when I try running msconfig the dos command closes on me before i can finish typing

does anybody have any idea what can be causing this?

A reinstall often cannot remove some of the viruses running around at the moment.

Now that you have repaired (by a re-install of XP) all the Adware, Spyware and virus infections it is time to remove them.

A clean install of XP after reformatting would only require SP2 to be loaded for you to become completely up to date with all updates available from Windows Update site.
