XP shutdown problems

please could someone let me know the usual suspects for shutdown failure in XP?

symptom is that the OS splash just hangs.

Usually it is some type of software problem. Some program interfering with the shut down progress.

The usual suspect is that Service Pack 1 is not installed to fix Easy-CD issues. In the alternative:
