I haver un the XP setup countless times but everytime it is stopping at installing windows with 39 minutes left now i can still move the mouse pointer and the windows xp information screens still flick through but nothing else is happening i am doing a repair and would prefer not to wipe the hard disk

Erm, had this issue before whe upgrading from a Win98 OS, its was down to hardware inconpatibilatyies, i just removed all non critical hardware, i.e. printers, soundcards, Modems etc and then the install went through fine, may be a similar issue here!
Or you may have a dodgy copy of WinXP cd, got another machine you can try it on, you may have read issues with the disk.
