XP Running Problem

Hi,

I have built a computer system using Athlon Processor etc..
But I have a problem with Windows XP.

When Installing Windows XP the computer hangs when the installation program is copying the setup files across to the hard drive. When I restart the computer to try again it hangs at different stages of the copying files process every time I restart and try again.

I have replaced the hard drive with a new one, and it it did it again. After several times of trying it eventually installed.

When I try to install the drivers for the motherboard and chipset, it also hanged, but eventually it worked.

I then tried to to install service pack 1, it hanged again half way through copying the new files. When I restarted the system to try again, the system restarts at the Windows XP logo screen. It does this all the time now.
I have tried safe mode, but it just restarts itself at the windows XP logo screen.

I have replaced the motherboard/CPU/ Hard Drive, RAM, I have also tried other CD drives.

It seems the system hangs every time I try to install anything.

Has anyone ever come across this problem before, its got me baffled!

It sounds like a hardware problem. Though you've already changed a number of the normal prime suspects - look at other possibilities - eg, power supply, graphics/network/modem/sound cards etc.

Have you clean reinstalled XP afer changing components (particularly motherboard?)

Thanks for your reply wolluf.

The graphics/network/modem/sound are onboard. And I have tried another PSU.

However I have noticed that the system case I have used has raised lumps to mount the motherboard on, thus not allowing me to use the brass screw holders which I normally do. Ive just mounted the motherboard onto these lumps sticking up from the inside of the case. This could have caused or is causing a short or bad earth on the motherboard.

I have ordered another style of case and new motherboard.

I Will append to this thread if this was the cause.
