Hello there,
I have a notebook and a desktop computer, both running XP Home Edition.
In order to share my broadband Internet connection and establish an Intranet between them I bought a Router Switch (an Edimax BR-6104S). The odd thing is that both computers connect perfectly to the Internet when connected separately (directly to the cable modem), however the notebook when connected to the router doesn’t even allow the computer to ping the IP address of the router.
On the other side the desktop computer works quite smoothly with the router, not only it connected the Internet when I plugged the cable through the router right out of the box as I can obviously access the router and all of its configuration options through the web browser. The router's manual doesn’t give me any clues and I wonder if someone could give me a hint on what to do regarding the configuration of my notebook. I checked the configuration and the network configurations on both computer are the same: both DHCP and automatic DNS are enabled…
I’d really appreciate any help on this!
Thanks in advance!!

Do you have the firewall on? some times that can be a proble.

Connect them both, do an ipconfig /all and see if they are getting the same ip address. You said dhcp and dns are being used. If this is the case, you may have a hosts file that are giving the machines the same ip. Just a thought. Good luck.

Thanks for all your replies!!
They were really appreciated.
After much configuration messing, including a TCP/IP stack reset (something quite useful in case the XP's TCP/IP stack gets corrupted) router configuration and so forth, I finally came back to the basics and thought that it was quite strange that both the routers I tried always gave the same problem... so I switched cables and to my complete surprise the problem was gone!!!!!
It turns out that although both router's leds for this link were on, as if it was good, there was a problem somewhere in the cable (it's a 15m 'handmade' cable).
So I bought a new cable and... everything's working! How silly not to have verified the cable in the beginning, even with the routers leds on!

I am continually stumped by problems with Windows XP professional and DHCP binding issues.. Any clues?
Generally the machines have had Norton System works installed. The symptoms are No DHCP release or renew, and no Inet connectivity. I have followed the procedure for resetting the IP stack, removed the dependencys in the registry norton has added. Event log shows Event 7003.
Attempting to reStart the DHCP service results in "Item marked for Deletion error" I Downloaded a Tcpip "fix".. attempted "Repair" Now ready for the fun part? Set the system clock to the year 2040 (DHCP lease to expire on 2034) and I get connectivity until I reboot.
Diags shows the DHCP server address at 255.255.255.255 (FAILED) Manually entered the server address (Linksys) X.1
Via the registry- Applied the patch supplied by Norton.
Yes I also tried a /renew ,Dns flush, 127.0.0.1 responds
but the netcard is forced to the 169. addy with no gateway info. Outside of the date change, the only thing that worked once was the Winipfix(reboot) followed by a repair.. and it only worked until the next reboot.
The nic card was then properly assigned 192.168.X.X- Gateway was proper and the subnet was correct.
Until you reboot!

Is this a Norton issue?? Xp repair sometimes works, but most of the time its a reload of the OS... - HELP GRR.

Hi RVITECH,
My knowledge is not up to a level where I can help you in this apparently complex problem.
But it doesn't mean I can't suggest a few things:
1st) of the most obvious is to apply all the updates to your XP, specially SP1. There are cases of problems getting solved by this alone.
2nd) there's a great Microsoft Knowledge Base article: n. 314067 - How to troubleshoot TCP/IP Connectivity with Windows XP. The url is: I know you probably have read it but in case you didn't here it goes (you already tried many of the things they mention there)
3rd) A last resort: Post a reply request in one of the microsoft forums, you might want to complement your post with the results from the Network Diagnostics Tool (at the command prompt type "netsh diag gui") during the moment where the computer has got the problems you mention.
Good luck!
