I posted this thread in the modem section last week with no help, I figured I would try it again.

I just purchased a new PC and I'm running Windows XP Pro with WinFaxPro 9 and an Intel 537EP modem, XP does not support the distinctive ring function, it has worked with all my other operating systems and PC's over the past 8 years, but Microsoft eliminated that function in the XP registry so they do not have to suporrt the various modems on the market. There have been some websites offering help but none of there fixes seem to work. I have a phone line with distinctive ring patterns on it from the phone company, I also have a modem that supports distinctive ring. I have one phone line with 2 numbers on it, the main number has a regular single ring and the other number which I use for my Fax has a double ring. Need to edit the registry to enable the distinctive ring function in XP. If all else fails I can always install a ring detector between the PC and the phone jack, (I'm trying to avoid that option).

For a detailed discussion of the problem and possible fixes, check out,

Some of the fixes almost worked, but left some key functions unavailable, one fix worked pretty well accept every time you re-booted the PC it failed. Thanks anyway for replying.

Thanks in advance to all who try to figure this out.

Have a Nice Day,

This same question was raised here by this Forum member last week: thread779-987884

While it is without question that some FAX modems, and some FAX software, can be tricked into using distinctive ring, neither the FAX modem owned by this Forum member nor the FAX software being used can.

The link provided by the original poster is quite good, and quite clever, yet will yield no joy for this user with the FAX modem and FAX software being used.

. change the FAX modem to one where one of the linked tricks seems to work; or,

. change the FAX software to one that replaces the native TAPI for FAX to support distinctive ring; or,

. as suggested multiple times in the link above, use a hardware distinctive ring switching device.

I am sorry it will not work out as provisioned by this forum member in hardware and software. Microsoft plans no FAX TAPI offerings or upgrades to help. The registry changes discussed in the link by the poster are in the main registry entries created by the FAX drivers of the devices and are not XP TAPI default registry settings.

I’m sorry you missed it, but I did state in my first sentence of this thread that I had posted this problem last week.

Also you stated,

“While it is without question that some FAX modems, and some FAX software, can be tricked into using distinctive ring, neither the FAX modem owned by this Forum member nor the FAX software being used can”.

The modem and fax software that is in question, is right now working perfectly fine, using distinctive ring, in my other PC running on Windows ME. That machine is running 24/7 strictly to accept faxes in the distinctive ring mode, for my business and I would prefer shutting that PC down permanently.

I also know that it has been suggested multiple times, (in the link I provided), to use a hardware distinctive ring switching device. As I stated in the thread I was really trying to avoid going that route, but if need be I will.

The reason I posted this problem again is I thought with all the knowledgeable members of Tek-Tips that one of them might be a programmer that had figured out this problem, it is obvious you're not one of them, but thank you very much for responding again to my thread.

You stated in the modem forum. My point was you had posted here in the XP Forum as well: Thread779-987884

As I responded there, there is no support under XP TAPI for modems distinctive ring. I am happy your modem and Winfax Pro 7.5 works under Windows ME. It will not work under XP to support distinctive ring.

I honestly did try and help you. I can do little if you did not like the answer to buy a switching device. But I see no reason to lamely attempt an insult as your response.

The reason I posted the second thread in XP was I thought I might get a better response.

Your 2 responses to my original thread and now this one made me feel like you just might be talking down to me, as if I might not have done any research before I posted my questions. If that was not your intent then I truly apologize.

I thought there just might be an easy fix to this problem, maybe possibly change one registry setting or something that easy, I did not want to rush out and purchase a distinctive ring switching device and then someone comes up with the solution the next day. I had a similar problem running my HP scanner on XP 3 weeks ago when I purchased the new PC. I had just about given up after looking for a solution for almost 2 weeks and was going to purchase a new scanner and then the Tek-Tip user “linney” posted this link,

It turned out to be a simple fix. Anyway, sorry we got off track as to the goals of this website and I do apologize if I insulted you in anyway.
