hi guys,
i have a big problem with my PC im using a XP home edition SP1 for a year i have no problem encountered using this OS, after 1 year and several months im encountering weird problems like when im opening my PC it always restart and sometimes just the screen is black nothing comes out from the screen so i have to restart it, when i restart my PC automatically it will prompt me to do a checkdisk so i tried it after 30+% of checking it hungs up again i wait for how many minutes and still no response from my PC so i have to restart it again and again and again and again, after so many restart in will prompt me an checksum error, and as usuall i have to restart it again and again, then there are times that it will log me in. but still there are times when im using it like im typing a office document and etc it will automatically restart and the saga continues.... guys i want to know what seems to be the problem? do i need to format my PC? thanks guys

It sounds like either your hard drive or some of your memory is dying. A checksum error means that some data hasn't been written properly, probably to the hard drive but possibly to memory.

If you have any data that you want to keep, I would try to back it up next time you manage to log on.

If you can, take the hard drive out of your PC and connect it to another XP machine as its second hard drive. Start the machine up and run checkdisk on the problem drive. If it shows errors then you know that there's something wrong with the drive.

If that's the case get hold of a new hard drive, install it in your original machine and reinstall Windows from scratch.
