XP Pro vs. Home Boot up

I installed XP Pro over XP Home Edition, apparantly without formatting my drive correctly, and now when I boot up, a screen asks me which version I want to start up. I can't start up the home edition without an error, which is OK because I don't want to use this version anyways. But how do I get rid of the XP Home Edition component that casues this scren to pop up during the booting process?

Hi Gregg,

There is a file at the root of your Boot drive called boot.ini. This file is generally found at c:\boot.ini

This file contains the details about the operating systems you have on your computer and which one to load as a default.

First take a copy of the boot.ini incase of problems.

Open this boot.ini file and it will look something like the following:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home" /fastdetect

Remove the line that references XP Home, Save the file and then reboot.

Now it should just load the default profile.

Alternativly if you do not feel comfortable you can use the MS Configuration Utility to do remove the menu

Click Start > Run > Type msconfig > Click ok

Click on the Boot.ini tab > Hilight the Xp Pro line and set it as default > Change Time out to 1 second > Click Apply > Click ok

now the menu will appear for 1 second only and will load your XP Pro install.

Quickfix:

Go to Control Panel -> System -> Advanced Tab -> Startup + Recovery.

Untick "Time to display list of Operating Systems"
Then make sure "Default Operating System" is set to "Microsoft Windows XP Professional
