Hi All,

here's my setup. We have an NT4 network with various policies being given to users on NT4 workstations by ntconfig.pol. We are about to upgrade a bunch of NT4 PCs with XP Pro. Currently users are roaming but we have no need for this so I am planning to make them local.

My question is: does ntconfig.pol apply to the XP machines. I need to apply a few policies to the users and machines they log on to. I could apply them using gpedit.msc but may not need to if the settings are coming from ntconfig.pol. Another alternative (assuming ntconfig.pol does get merged) would be to start off with a blank ntconfig.pol (wher does this come form?) and then to apply the policies using gpedit .msc.

what do you think. help mucho apprceiated!

If my memory serves me correct, ntconfig.pol does not work between an NT domain and XP/2000 users.

ntconfig.pol works for 2000 clients on an NT4 domain definately (we use it here).

I do not know if it would work on XP clients, however you could surely tell in 5 minutes if you had an XP workstation?

It should work, as XP is just a prettier version of NT with more bugs :)

Policies on NT server held in ntconfig.pol are effective on XP. You create an ntconfig.pol file (in the netlogon share) by running system policy editor on the server - if you currently have policies in place, there will be one already (when you run policy editor, you can open existing policy file or create a new set of policies and save as ntconfig.pol - overwrting existing). The equivalent of a blank one is to just not have one at all.
