Hi all need a little help as follows:

NT4 domain, with a number of BDC's at remotes sites on different subnets.

DHCP is run via Lucent QIP

Anyway caertain XP pro machines fail to find the domain when adding through netork ID. error cound not find domain xxx, domain controler may be down ...

If i boot into the pc locally it pickup an IP and DNS, can ping the reset of the LAN bdc and pdc via name and IP, i can RDP that PC from the LAN,

The pc has been rebuilt with XP no firewall no Av still has this issue.

however when i ping domain name i.e. xxx - no resolution. but i tryed this from an XP pc which is workign fine on the domain and again could not ping domain name, hence - not sure if you should be able to ping a domain name like this??

I notice a lot of PC's complain about roming profiles i.e. using locally cashed profile, hence possibly this is related?

any ideas? what can i try to troubleshoot?

Thanks in advance

try looking on the TCP/IP settings if it is using NetBIOS over TCP/IP. NT domains use NetBIOS. Do you have WINS in place?

benlu - thanks for the link just what i was looking for

Use DHCP to supply the WINS server address. I note from your post that your PC gets an IP address and a DNS server address. You need to supply WINS information as your infrastruture is spread over different subnets.

If your PC is not in the subnet where the PDC is located, a computer account cannot be created without information on where to find the PDC. Relevant broadcast information is not passed over routers. BDC's only contain a read-only copy of the SAM database.

Using a LMHOSTS file is a valid resolution but ultimately not a long term solution.
