I am unable to export or backup messages from outlook express in Windows XP Pro. In windows ME I was able to copy the outlook express flder and back it up onto another hardrive or export/import it onto another computer. But XP doesn't allow this-- any ideas?

Thank you
bch

You are probably looking for the older filenames. Backing up and reinstating mail files is pretty straightforward. To back up your mail files, use Find | Files & Folders and look for your *.mbx files. When you find those files, you'll see that every *.mbx file has a correlative *.idx file. You should save each and every one of your *.mbx files -- do not save the related *.idx files. You always are better off letting OE recreate the *.idx files if you need to reinstate your mail folders.

Eric Miller's site has a lot of information on backup and restoration, import and other functions. See: for backup, but browse the site for other functions.

Thanks so much for all the info --great link

If you right-click on any Outlook Express mail folder and select Properties you will be given the exact location of that folder. You can now copy and paste it anywhere.

This is an example using "Deleted Items".

C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{45892BBA-8447-42B9-8B72-9DF2CAD1B5E5}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Deleted Items.dbx
