I've got an XP Pro system that out of the blue is having some problems:

1. Taking forever to startup. (no new h/w or s/w recently added)

2. If I try to get into control panel / system...it just never opens up.

3. The task bar at the bottom of the screen has disappeared.

4. I can't seem to copy any files to the hard drive.

5. I can't run an install from a CD.

Sounds like either a system corruption of some kind / hard drive corruption or both.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks...

I suggest to first update and check all drivers for virus.
and update all sp and secutiry updates from microsoft.
After you do that please recheck and see whats happends.

hope this helps

First go to and run the free Virus Scan.

Go to and install all critical updates.

Download Spybot and Adaware Run the scans on both pieces of software.

If you are still having problems download Hijack This from and generate a startup log from clicking on Config then Misc Tools from within the software. Then post the log here.

Thanks for the suggestions.....but I can't even get the unit on the internet. I can't run any programs on it. I can't pull up the control panel system icon....and when I try to access Drive management it locks up.

Boot into safemode and then try the suggestions above. To get into safe mode keep pressing F8 after the Bios details have appeared and select safemode from options.

If you can boot from a floppy and know the harddrive manufacturer (not personally) you can get a free diagnostic program that will run from your floppy to check out the harddrive.

The more common ones include -

Again if you can boot from a floppy you can run RAM checking programs.
