XP Pro / SP1 won't recognize USB 2.0 ports 2

Hi,

I just built a PC (my first time not getting one "off the shelf") and everything works well, so far, except:

When I plug a USB device into one of the 6 available ports, I receive an error message that basically states that I've plugged a USB 2.0 device into a 1.1 port. All the ports generate the same error. The motherboard mfg. (Asus) requires XP Pro with SP1 for USB 2.0 compatibility.

I installed XP Pro (fresh) and SP1, but there MAY have been a problem with the SP1 install (it hung for a while), although all the system reports I can find say it is installed properly. However, one of the ports (in Device Manager) shows up with a yellow triangle. Asus insists (and I can't really argue with them) that it's a faulty SP1 installation.

Questions:
1. Is there some way to verify that SP1 was installed properly or not?
2. Is there a way to fix the installation without having to rollback to before SP1 was installed? (I've loaded a bunch of stuff since)?
3. Any other suggestions or more information I can provide?

Anyway, I just joined this forum and this is my first ever post. I hope I can clean this up with your assistance.

2. Use Device Manager and delete the USB root hubs that show on your machhine now.

3. Reboot and let XP rediscover the ports.

Verifying SP1 install.

Have a look in the Windows Folder at any Setup log files and Service Pack logs.

Run WINVER via the Start Run box to verify SP1 was properly installed.

Just curious, but if I discover that the SP1 install was indeed defective, are there any remedial steps I can take?

Also, do you think (anyone?) I should try the patch bcastner described first?
A question I had about that: All the USB ports are directly connected to the motherboard, would they still be considered "root hubs"?

You should see 1 or 2 root hub emtroes om Device Manager even if the USB ports are on the motherboard. It refers to the USB support chip(s).

Depending how you selected options when installing SP1 there will be an uninstall option in Add or Remove. Do not use System Restore as that will cause extra problems. A repair installation would also erase SP1.

You will lose all your windows updates (+ SP1) but your files will be untouched.

I checked to make sure that SP1 was installed properly (it was) and then I ran that USB update.

It worked!!!
