Hi guys,

I'm having a problem that's really bugging me and I can't seem to find help anywhere.

Here it goes:

Whenever I log off, shut the computer down or un-plug the cat 5 cable from my computer my internet connection goes down. When I try to trouble shoot to reconnect I find that the "Automatically detect IP address" isn't automatically detecting the IP address. I then type it in manually. Everything works fine, UNTIL I log off, reboot or unplug the cat 5 cable.

This also happens on my wireless network and happens on more than one computer (my laptop and my desktop both running Windows XP)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks- Chai Guy : )

How do you have your tcpip settings setup?
Is your IP static or dynamic?
Who/What is your DHCP Server? the ISP? Your Router?

Have your tried ipconfig /release
then ipconfig /renew ??

If you don't have a DHCP server available and it set as your default gateway then WinXP will default to an internal IP address.. check your event logs..

Need more information as to ISP setup, if you have a router? If your IP never changes then set it up as there might not be a DHCP server to set up your ip address's

How do you have your tcpip settings setup?

IP Address: 192.168.X.X
Subnet:
Default Gateway: 192.168.X.X

Preferred DNS Server 69.108.xxx.xxx
Alternamte DNS 216.104.xx.xx

Have your tried ipconfig /release
then ipconfig /renew ??

No, I'll try that now

We have a static IP,

What's the best way to configure this thing to work? The automatically detect settings isnt' working and I continue to have to re-enter the IP manually. Thanks for your help, I really appreicate it!

what is providing the DHCP for your network, a router?

if so, are you sure that DHCP is turned on in the router?

~Shmoes

Not sure if it's being provided by the router or not, how do I check?

Thanks, Chai

I did ipconfig/all and saw this

Host Name.......................:VAIO
Primary Dns Suffix...............
Node Type........................Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled...............No
WINS Proxy Enabled...............No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description............................ Realteck RTL Family PCI Fast Ethernet

Ethernit NIC
Physical Address.......................00-E0-18-XX-XX
Dhcp Enabled...........................NO
IP Address.............................192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask............................255.255.255.0
Default Gateway........................192.168.1.1
DNS Servers............................69.108.XXX.XXX
216.XXX.XX.XX

Do I need to enable DHCP on the routher? How do I do that? Thatks, Chai : )

something needs to provide DHCP, what type of router is it?
you must log into the router and turn the option on, if it's not already on by default.

if it's turned on in the router by default you should be able to set it up on your computer just by turning on obtain ip automaticly.

what IP address are you given (ipconfig /all) after you turn that on.

Ah, I finally found the problem. The DSL Cable Modem and the router both had DCHP enabled, since the Modem has several ports and I only needed 2 I just ditched the router, now we are up and running and automatically detecting the IP. Thanks everyone. - Chai : )
