XP pro networking, 2 nics, no DNS

Not sure if this goes here.
PC has 2 nics, one goes thru DMZ with a static IP, no problem. Other nic is Obtain automatically, cannot get to inter or extranet, DNS error.
We have removed and readded them(including removing TCP/IP), did every ipconfig / tool,
switched static and automatic IPs on each card(static works on either one, automatic will not work on either one), cabling in and out works(tested with other pcs and laptops). Also checked cabling in server room, all ok there.
Can ping the nic, Windows firewall OFF. IF we set either card to Obtain auto, it wont get a DNS.
We have had the lowest helpdesk tech to the net admin look at it.
Everyones(except mine) conclusion is reimage....argghh... just cause Obatin IP automatically wont work??
We are stumped.

Forgot to add, DHCP is running...

may be a silly question but did you set the second NIC to be used as "connects to the internet thru another PC on this network"?
