So last night I started noticing problems. Heard about the worm. Updated Norton, didn't find anything, looked in the registry, nothing, looked at processes, nothing abnormal... Downloaded the patch, got error 1058, something about cryptsvc. Tried to enable it in Admin Tools and CMD and it won't start. Renamed catroot2 and all that jazz...still won't start it. Tried to reinstall SP1a, same error. Here's some of the problems I'm having.

Desktop was rearranged
Open windows will not dock to taskbar
Quick launch was gone
When I try to open some files it gives me a "memory too low" error
Takes forever to Startup and Login (5 mins. +)
Internet is slow
Links don't work in IE

I think those are the majors. This is really making me batty. Any ideas that I haven't tried? Thanks.

System Restore.
The MSTBLAST worm will not do what you describe, but the problems with the cryptology service is troubling.

Use a restore point from two days ago and re-apply the security Hotfix.

Also, enable the native XP firewall.

i AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, MY START BAR IS MISSING, WINDOWS TAKES FOREVER TO LOAD, BUT I WAS ABLE TO USE NORTONS FIX FOR THE WORM, COMP IS STILL MESSED UP THOUGH. ANY IDEAS ?

System Restore.
Pick a date two or more days ago.

I don't have System Restore on so I can't go back. Out of curiousity, I tried to open Backup anyway and it wouldn't open.

Several issues here, I will answer them as best I can.

Cryptographic Service

This would explain Service Pack 1 installation and other problems.

Resolution:

An update is now available that can correct this issue, to obtain it visit the Windows Update site and download Q817287: Critical Update (Catalog Database Corruption in Microsoft Windows), this should correct the problem and prevent it in future. This update will not appear on the Windows Update site unless you have Service Pack 1 for Windows XP installed. If the update does not install correctly or does not fix the problem follow the steps below.

To correct this issue, first go Start > Run and enter services.msc
A list of Windows Services should now appear on your screen, scroll down the list until you find Cryptographic Services. Right click this and select properties. Now ensure that the startup type is set to automatic and click the start button in that window if the service status is stopped.
If the problem persists, go to run and type in cmd then click ok.
Next type in the following commands, at the end of each line press the return key on your keyboard
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

Now attempt to run the Service Pack 1/DX9 installer again

I appreciate the help but whenever I try to install ANY kind of patch or update, I get the same error. Did some research and I found out what I did. Problem is how to fix it. I deleted Windows Installer 2.0 for XP. I believe I somehow did this using the DiskCleanup tool. Now, you can download 2.0 for Win95 - 2000 but I can't find it for XP. When I try to download the others, it gives me a wrong OS error. My computer did not come with a disk so I'm screwed on that end. I'm "guessing" this will fix my prob...at least fix a problem that will let me fix others. Any pointers? Thanks.

Is the Remote Procedure Call service running on your machine? If it is not than the Windows installer is not running either.

To restore the RPC services and initiate other services as a result for WinXP Pro (not Home):

right-click on your Desktop, New, Text file.
right-click and rename the file fixservice.reg, ignore the warning.
right click and open the file for editing.

Now do a copy and paste of the all the lines betweeen ***'s below into this new text/reg file. Save the file.
Double click the file and let the registry merge occur.

Reboot.

Wow, bcastner, you've been really helpfull. Unfort, the problem still persists even after all your help. I have no idea what caused this and...don't know what to do. I even used BlackViper's default reg merges for XP Pro and nothing. I CAN now change properties in Services so that's one plus. But I still get the crypt error when I try to install anything. Thinking it still has something to do with Windows Installer. Hmmm... I'm still researching the net and racking my brains. If ya'll run across anything, please post. Guess this is an isolated problem though... :(
