I just received a used pc running windows XP but when I boot up it prompts me for an id and pw which I don't have. Is there a way to bypass this prompt on boot up?
Is it windows asking for the ID and Password or the BIOS? If it is the BIOS then go into the BIOS and note the settings for your HD and then there should be a jumper on the motherboard to clear the BIOS CMOS ram. That will also clear the password. How old is this machine that is running WinXP?

See if the Administrator account has a blank password. Type Administrator in the user box and leave the password field blank and press enter. If this is XP Home you will have to boot into safe mode to access the Administrator account. If this will let you into the OS, then you can change the passwords of the accounts or turn the password protection off.
That does not apply here. That utility is for resetting the BIOS password. You are now looking at reinstalling Windows or using a 3rd party recovery tool which may cost you some money.
