XP Pro Auto Log On

Hello,

My client recently bought a laptop which is set to log directly into an account. I've created a new account for the client, but when I start the comp it logs directly into some default account. I've checked under User Accounts and played with the setting but nothing seems to make any diff. If I try to log off from that default account, it logs off and then automatically logs back in! Only way i can get into the account I created is by choosing to log off and the chosing Switch User. Any ideas? Thanks in advancce.

Try this: Start, Run, control userpasswords2, OK. Place a checkmark in 'Users must enter a username....', then OK.

Thanks for the quick reply. That takes me to User Accounts. Only options I have are, Change an account, creat a new account, change the way users log on or off. Under Change the way user log or off, both Use the welcome screen and Use Fast Switching are checked. There are no other options. Thanks.

Did you include the [!]2[/!] as in userpasswords[!]2[/!]? Or is this xp home?

Go to the XP help and support center on the pc. Do a search for: automatic logon. There you will find directions on how to set up an automatic login. Read the directions. Using regedit, I would find the default password entry and DELETE it. This should then force the user to enter a password in order to logon to the laptop.


According to the help, using control userpasswords2 is only supposed to work for a computer NOT part of a domain.

The easy way to check is to install Microsoft's 'TweakUI XP' Powertoy (if not already installed) and look at the AutoLogon setting.

TweakUI XP is available from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx.

The hard way is to look in the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

Change the value of AutoAdminLogon from '1' (enabled) to '0' (disabled). This should be the only change you need to make.

Note that you can bypass 'AutoLogon' by holding down the SHIFT key during the boot or logoff process. If you find that you can't bypass the 'AutoLogon' function then have a look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and change the value of ForceAutoLogon from '1' to '0'.
