Hi,

Ive got a bit of a prob...

I have two harddisks...

I had Win98 installed on C drive (Seaget HD 9gb) and Xp installed on D: (Samsung HD, 6gb)

Im very happy with XP but I want to convert it to run off the C drive coz theres more space on the disk.

I have tried to copy the image from C to D but each time I do, My PC does not boot up.
The only way is to Install Win98 on the C drive to allow me to choose between the two OS's.

WHat is the best way to copy the entire XP from D to C?

ANy ideas would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance!
Sam...

Thanx dor that...
But its not exactly what Im looking for.

The MS KB is mainly for how to setup dual booting...

My problem is that my system was a dualboot where WIndows 98 was on C and Windows XP is on D, but want I want to do in to invert i.e. make WIn XP on C and Win98 on D and then eventually delete 98 all together and to boot from C into XP with all my image from D.

I have Nortons Ghost and have copied the contents of the D drive (WinXP) from D to C, but when I restart i get "Non system Disk error".

but if i boot from a dos disk and then install windows 98 then I can dualboot again..

Hope that makes Sense

I think that the only way your going to have any success is this:
You will have to do a clean install of Windows XP on the 9 GB hard drive, if that is where you want it.

2 reasons:
1st is the reason I read about on another thread: With Norton Ghost going to another hard drive, XP won't boot up again because of the product activation. It sees a different "system" since the HD is changed. It doesn't like that. Now, you maybe able to call MS on that and explain what you did, and use the Norton Ghost that way.

2nd is the problem your having. I don't know what to say, not only have you not had any success getting it to run, but you have not even got to the point of problem 1.

This just reinforces my belief that your not going to get it to work.

** LAST ** I have used Norton Ghost for maybe 3 1\2 years now, and used it quite a few times, and now 4 different (or 5 different versions). I used GHOST before it was ever NORTON Ghost,,,,, (before they bought it).
IT ALWAYS works best, and is really designed to work CLONING, and that means having IDENTICAL HD's. What maybe happening with you is that the partition information is different, and that NT (XP) won't accept these changes. See, your copying all the info from one Drive, and then that doesn't match the new drive. It just isn't going to match the REAL parameters....... therefore, failure.

Only a clean / fresh install will solve the problems.

Sorry I couldn't give you the answer you wanted.

Hey Jakespeare,

Thanx for that...
I was thinking along the same lines..
WHat Ive done is basically installed XP onto C also (and Edited the boot.ini to make it more descriptive).

I guess its just that I spent along time configuring XP how I want it and now I have to do it all again!
Im Just being lazy!

I even tried using the files and settings transfer....but it didnt work with great success...Unless i do groups at at time..hmmm

Question...What are the most important files that are needed in terms of user specific settings .e.g.:

- NTUser.DAT
- Desktop.Ini
etc etc

Is there a definitive list or something out there?
Cheers
Sam

In answer to your using the Files and Transfer Wizard. Have you checked out the Themes on the Display Properties page. You can save your Themes for XP to floppy and then re-import them from floppy to your newly re-installed XP.
