I keep recieving an error mesage requesting my Service pack 1 and it is part of my SP Pro installation disk.
Can I reinstall SP Pro OS with losing my data or do I need to back up everything I must save?

Thanks for the help.

Have you tried downloading the SP1 from Microsoft's Windows Update Site and reinstalling that?

I have tried download and have purchased the service pack but nothing works and the message still pops up, I did receive a suggestion to reinstall the OS but I do not want to back up the entire C drive

Thanks

Chuck

Chuck,

Can you give more background on this? Presumably its just started happening (so have you recently changed any hardware/software). You might want to run anti-spyware software (eg, spybot or adaware) - presume you have current anti-virus protection.

Have you installed SP1?

You can do a repair reinstall (loses windows updates - including service pack if install SP1, install CD not - but keeps data, apps, settings intact - but would prefer to know what you've done first (you can also create a SP1 install disk if you have no service pack version)

wolluf,

I had this computer built with windows XP Pro as the OS the installation disk notes Service Pack 1 included. I ahve been receiving the pop up mesage for about 4 month. I x out and am told the window files are not the original and unstable and I may lose data, do I want to continue and I click yes and go on my merry way.

I have downloaded Service Pack 1 and purchased the CD for service pack 1 and when I insert the disk a message tells me it is the incorrect disk so I x out click yes and go on my merry way.I have also cahtted with microsoft and the problem was not corrected, using the OS disk cleard the pop up but it was back within the hour or at reboot which ever came first.

I ahve been told to reinstall my OS that includes Service Pack 1 and this will solved the problem. That is where I am and I am looking for confirmation that reinstalling the OS wioll not cause files, folders or data to be lost.

Thanks for any assistance,

Chuck

If you run a repair reinstall - - you won't lose data, apps or settings - just windows updates (so just visit Windows Updates).

Hopefully this will sort you out - but if it doesn't, you might be better off backing up, wiping the drive and doing a clean install. I'd still be a bit concerned about what has caused this (could be a hardware problem or spyware/virus etc).

Start, Run, sfc /Scannow

Have the XP CD w/Service Pack 1 ready to insert in your CD drive.
