Just installed XP home edition. So far so good...but I have a couple of questions and hopefully someone here can help.

1. Is there a way to make explorer open to the c drive automatically?

2. Also this is my personal computer... am not sharing with anyone. I have in explorer "shared documents" "My documents" and then another folder of documents. And they are all the same!! Is there some one to get rid of all but one?

3. I also notice that sometimes when I am online the little computer in the task bar does not show up. Have I done something? If so what and how do I correct it?

These are just the beginning of my questions. I'm sure that I will have more in the future. Many thanks in advance for everyone's help.

1. I found this on the web somewhere, it gives this advice about Explorer.

"If you want Windows Explorer to open in the root folder of Drive C:. Right-click the Windows Explorer shortcut that you use to run the program and choose Properties. When the Windows Explorer Properties dialog box opens, click the Shortcut tab. Click in the Target entry box, and then press End. Add to the end of the existing line /e, c:\. The complete line in the Target entry box should now be

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e, c:\

The /e switch tells Windows Explorer to open in the two pane explorer mode and the c:\ tells it to open in folder C:\. If you wish to have Explorer open at My Documents, you would use

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e, c:\My Documents

If you omit the /e switch, Windows Explorer opens in a single pane view."

2. The only Documents and Settings folders you can safely delete are any Users you have created. Folders like Administrator, All Users and Default User are all part of Windows. Sorry if I have misunderstood your question.

3. Have you set this option to hide inactive icons under Start Menu (Taskbar) Properties.

From Help and Support program.

"Taskbar notification area overview.

The notification area of the taskbar is where you usually see the current time displayed. This area can become crowded with notification icons that appear when certain events occur, such as when you receive e-mail or when you open Task Manager. Windows displays a notification icon when an event occurs. After a short time, Windows puts the icon in the background to simplify that area. You can access the icons that have been placed in the background by clicking a button in the notification area.

In addition, you can customize the behavior of notification icons on the Taskbar tab of the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box.

Note

To open the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box, right-click an empty area on the taskbar, and then click Properties."

I HAVE WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION, EVERY TIME I BOOT UP OR START, THE "MY DOCUMENTS" OPENS UP BE DEFAULT. I HAVE TO MANUALLY CLOSE IT DOWN EVRYTIME. I CHANGED THE TARGET FROM "C" TO "G" BUT IT DIDN'T CHANGE A THING.

HELP!

THANKS

When you shut down my documents after it shows on startup, try selecting file close while holding down the shift key.

I have installed a new HDD & upgraded to XP Home, but have found a consistent problem with my Brother 1440 laser printer. Every time I print I get a message "there is nt enough space on your PC please delete some files to make space."... If I click OK, then everything just goes ahead & prints out fine regardless. I have loaded the upgraded XP driver, and have tried changing the settings to "print directly to printer" (which eliminates the problem) - making me guess it's a spooling problem - but from there I have no ideas on how to fix it. Can anyone assist?

Caro-nz: Could you have a look at the spool location?
(Start / Printers and Faxes, and then on an empty spot in the Printers and Faxes window, alternate (usually right) click, and select Server Properties...

On the latest tab (advanced) you should see the spool dir mentioned... Does that dir exist, and did you not in some way change the NTFS (if used) permissions? ---
