Hi
I have a PC that just won't show up in Network Neighbourhood
Very strange, I have other XP machines on the network that do show up. The user assures me he hasn't been fiddling.
There is no security/firewall software installed on this box. Anyone have any ideas? It's causing me problems when trying to use my centrally manged AntiVirus update tools.

Thanks in advance.

Does the machine have the same network protocals running as your machine? can you manually map the drive to that computer?

Leon

I can map drive to the C$ share on this PC. Users DHCP and
all network config is exactly the same as mine.
I'm an NT bod really, just getting to grips with XP.

Don't forget, Windows has it's own firewall - which can prevent the PC from showing up in the network neighbourhood.

> Network Connections
> right click on the network icon
> select properties
> select the 'advanced' tab

Make sure it's in the correct workgroup
> [windowskey] [break]
> select 'computer name' tab
> select the 'change' button

Check the IP config; it should at least be in the same subnet as the others and calling an IP from the same DHCP server. Anything else isn't necessarily wrong, but is definately suspect.

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[ul][li]please tell us if our suggestion has helped[/li][li]need some help? faq581-3339[/li][/ul]

All is correct. Same Subnet, same DHCP Server, all Windows XP security is turned off. It really is strange, not to mention frustrating...

. No blank or empty passwords
. Under TCP/IP, Properties, Advanced, WINS tab, check 'enable Netbios over TCP/IP' on all machines
. Check that the Workgroup name is identical - use all Upper Case characters to avoid problems
. Something: drive, folder, printer, something shared on all machines
. Beware of firewall issues - particularly "hidden" firewalls in some antivirus packages; PC-Illan installed with its default setting would do this.

Some more background info.
We have a medium sized (350) LAN. Most clients running NT4 or XP. All connect to a domain. This one PC is the only one that isn't showing up in on the network. I've compaired
all settings with another Computer, all looks fine.
It's not actually causing any other problems other than when I'm trying to use McAfee ePO to deploy AntiVirus.

Is this AD domain?
Did you create a machine account for the new XP workstation?

Yeh, a domain.
There is an Account for this PC when I look in Server Manager, I've also tried taking it off and putting it back on the domain, still no joy. Just what you want on a Friday afternoon. Thanks very much for all your help though!

Remember if you remove, then re-add, a machine account it can easily be 45 minutes or more before it is recognized by the other computers.
