I swapped Mobo's and doing an update to an existing install of XP. Now its asking for the SP1 CD to load file ASMS. It gives locations D:\I386 or a:\ . Click ok and nothing. Copied the ASMS folder off the XP gold original to a floppy and A:\ - nada

Any ideas what is looking for and where to get the ASMS folder? I see it on the XP CD in the I386 folder. I' stuck.

It sounds like your Windows Installation Source path has somehow changed. What is drive D? Can you Browse to the correct location on the actual CD?

I suspect that your problem relates to the paths contained within the registry keys mentioned in this article.

i did the Shift 10 to get to the command line but it doesnt see the CD rom at all. I tried ever drive letter in the alphabet.

Now we're probably getting to the root of the problem. So, if I understand correctly, your CD Rom is not operational at all? (Not sure what you mean by Shift+F10... Are you referring to some boot up option?)

Step 1 would be to check Device Manager to make sure it shows up there without any errors. Step 2 might be to have a look at diskmgmnt.msc

After re-reading this discussion, I'm a bit confused:

Is this machine starting Windows at all?

No, windows is reinstalling files off the WIN XP CD and reboots, when it reboots it comes back to the installation and is asking for the ASMS on WINXP pro SP1. The ASMS file is under the i386 folder on the Install CD. I was wondering why is cant read it. It loaded the files off the CD fine, rebooted and then cant see the CD-ROM. Shift F10 gets me to DOS but i cant get to the cd ROM under D:, E:, ect.

What ServicePack have you currently installed SP2 or SP1?

Are you saying it can't read the CD (or see it) or it can't read the file ASMS.

Have you thought about getting SP2 slipstreamed on to a new CD?

Access to CD-ROM lost when GUI-mode Setup starts

Repair can't find file "asms"

This will perhaps allow you to get further information from the Setup logs?
